Getting to Kefalonia is easy with regular scheduled flights from London Gatwick (LGW) to Kefalonia (EFL) on EasyJet in-season (April/May to late October). You can also fly direct from London Gatwick, Manchester (MAN), Birmingham (BHX), Newcastle (NCL), Glasgow (GLA), Edinburgh (EDI), Cardiff (CWL) with either Monarch, Thomson and Thomas Cook. Links below are provided for most major airlines.
Out of season you can fly directly to Athens (ATH) from London Heathrow (LHR), Manchester (MAN) or London Gatwick with EasyJet, British Airways, Olympic Airways or Aegean Airlines. You can then take the short (45 mins) internal flight on a "puddle jumper" from Athens to Kefalonia. These are operated twice daily, every day by Olympic Airways.
Kefalonian Lines (www.KefalonianLines.com) operate from Killini on the mainland to Poros and Argostolli (and vice versa). It's a 70 minute crossing to Poros which is a 25 minute drive to Villa Louloudia and a 120 minute crossing to Argostolli. Kefalonian Lines operate 3 times daily to Poros and once daily to Argostolli. Ferries also operate twice daily, every day from Patras on the mainland to Sami - a 1hr 15minute crossing and a 45 minute drive from Sami to Villa Louloudia. Patras is a 3hr drive from Athens and Killini is 4hr from Athens. Please note: Some of the roads are toll roads so make sure you have some euros as credit cards are not accepted. Toll fees are approximately €3 each time and there are 4 toll stations (although this varies depending on the direction and time of day). Car rental (all major brands) are available in Athens Airport. For domestic and international ferry times and online booking click this link (www.ferries.gr). You don't normally need to book in advance - just show up and buy your ticket for the car and passengers at the ferry kiosk in Killini however it is advisable to book if you intend to use the ferry during a national public holiday or during August.
Driving from the UK or Europe? You can drive directly to either Patras or Killini. Another option is to drive to Ancona or Brindisi in Italy and take the ferry to Patras on the mainland and then a short drive (1hr) to Killini to pick up the ferry to Kefalonia.
Car hire is essential if you don't have your own. It is also recommended that you rent a car with an engine capacity of no less than 1000cc. Villa Louloudia has a fairly steep drive. Rental cars can be collected at Kefalonia Airport when you arrive. Pre-booking your rental car is also advisable and this can be done with any of the main companies, Hertz, Avis, National, Budget, Holiday Autos etc., or by emailing our friend at Hertz in Kefalonia and he will "do you a deal". Send and email to The Station Manager at Hertz by clicking this link: firstname.lastname@example.org or calling +30 6937 259 733 and tell them you were recommended by us!
Small speed boats are a great way of seeing the island from the sea but useless for doing the shopping - information on the Things To Do page
Mopeds and motorbikes can be rented in Scala and you'd be surprised how much you can carry on one but carrying suitcases and your friends/significant other may be a problem - information on the Things To Do page
Taxi's are available at the airport, and also Scala and Poros. They are safe, friendly, reliable and reasonably priced - approx. 10€ from Scala or 60€ from the airport to the Villa. Be warned though, they tend to drive like maniacs but provide a good alternative if you want to leave the rental car at home and go for a night out if you fancy a drink.
